The True Mandirigma (Warrior): The VSMMC Story
The Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) saw early on that addressing COVID-19 misinformation is crucial to successfully battling the virus. Acknowledging the infodemic as a pressing concern, VSMMC utilized its social media platforms to provide the general public a reliable source of information. Through Facebook live videos, VSMMC professionals helped in debunking myths about the pandemic. They also gave the public practical health tips and promoted mental health awareness, and worked to boost the morale of other frontliners. VSMMC’s Facebook page showed at least 30,000 post engagements per week and reached at least 100,000 people a weekly basis, with viewers coming from 45 countries.
The hospital also came up with strategies to address the need to increase COVID-19 testing in the Philippines. As early as the last week of March, it had established its own COVID-19 testing facility and launched drive-thru and walk-thru testing for the general public, improving access to free COVID testing. To ensure continuity in the delivery of medical services while protecting healthcare workers, VSMMC also adopted alternative work arrangements, activated contingency plans, implemented hospital zoning, strictly prohibited visitors from entering the hospital, and rapidly expanded its bed capacity. These initiatives have been recognized by national health authorities, underscoring VSMMC’s role in the Philippines’ fight against COVID-19.
