Perfection is the enemy of the Good
Within two weeks, the UZ Brussel hospital became a dedicated facility for treating COVID patients. This overhaul involved all of its over 3,800 staff and required all stakeholders to work together towards a common goal. To achieve its COVID-19 response targets, a complete change in hospital governance and management was necessary. This was achieved by a very intense communication campaign between the hospital management and staff. It also involved various expansion programs, such as the doubling of ICU capacity, separation of patient flows, and the training of personnel. This agile response allowed the hospital to successfully handle the first wave of COVID-19 patients, and enabled it to cope effectively with patient influx in succeeding waves of the virus.
