Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Riba D´Ave
Hospital Narciso Ferreira in combating COVID-19
With the start of the pandemic, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Riba D´Ave immediately established a Contingency Plan to safeguard its patients and staff. For the safety of hospitalized users, visits to the Continuing Care Unit were canceled, which significantly minimized external risk. Non-urgent scheduled activities, such as exams, consultations and surgeries, were also suspended in order to minimize the circulation of people in the facilities. SCM Riba D´Ave professionals were, as far as possible, placed on a teleworking regime, which allowed their prophylactic isolation. With the hospital activity practically suspended, SCM Riba D´Ave then made its facilities, equipment and professionals available to directly support the Portuguese National Service.
For instance, upon the detection of the first case in Portugal, the hospital immediately tested all patients in the Continuing Care Unit, all of whom had a negative result. At the Narciso Ferreira Hospital, which is part of the SCM Riba D´Ave compound, an extra 50 beds were made available for non-COVID patients, allowing other nearby hospitals to focus on the treatment of people infected with COVID. SCM Riba D´Ave also provided five ventilators for the neighboring Braga and Guimarães Hospitals to support critically ill patients.
