Sant Joan de Déu Serveis Sociosanitaris – Esplugues de Llobregat
A patient’s ability to remain in contact with family members plays a decisive role in recovery and rehabilitation. This is the reason why the Sant Joan de Déu Serveis Sociosanitaris prioritized the development of communication channels between confined patients and their family members during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The hospital consulted with professionals from related disciplines such as occupational therapy and social work. The team created a system in which all patients were offered the opportunity to call up to four loved ones through a video calling program on a tablet. These video calls could take place at least once per week.
Other healthcare professionals, such as nurses, assistants, rehabilitators, and physiotherapists supported the initiative by helping identify each patient’s communicative needs and facilitating the necessary logistics to carry out the activity.
The initiative was well-received by the management committee and professionals at the hospital. There was high demand for the service among patients and their families and they adapted to the schedules established for communication with their family members. At an organizational level, the hospital benefited from this initiative through the reduction in indiscriminate calls received at all hours from relatives requesting information on patients so that professionals were then able to provide proactive reports.
