Leading change and transforming healthcare in a global crisis
Novant Health’s comprehensive approach in tackling the pandemic successfully addressed the concerns of stakeholders both within and outside the organization. First, it addressed the needs of its staff particularly about personal safety and childcare, providing team members with practical tools and resources in dealing with their changing needs throughout the pandemic. Second, it rolled out creative solutions to ensure that patients being cared for remained safe and continued to receive the highest quality of care.
Through an innovative partnership with Stewart-Haas racing, Novant Health was able to secure needed tele-ICU carts, ultimately improving patient outcomes by shortening length-of-stay times, limiting COVID-19 exposure and giving patients the option to stay at their local hospital. Originally planned to be rolled out later in the year, the organization’s leadership accelerated the timeline and the NASCAR team played a vital role by being able to produce carts needed using a 3D printer.
Novant Health also became the first in the country to launch a long-distance emergency drone to deliver personal protective equipment (PPE). The operation included contactless distribution of PPE and critical medical supplies to front-line medical teams in the Charlotte, North Carolina, metro area. These initiatives put Novant health in a position to adapt quickly to the evolving pandemic. These measures could also be used for other purposes in the future, including testing, drug trials and vaccine distribution.
