Successful COVID-19 Response under the Leadership of Dr. Robert Peltier
The North Oaks Health System is the only acute care hospital in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Headed by its Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Robert Peltier, North Oaks was instrumental in implementing a comprehensive regional response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
As early as January 2020, Dr. Peltier began educating North Oaks medical staff and leadership on the COVID virus. As it became apparent that the pandemic was spreading to the United States in February and March, Dr. Peltier was the face of North Oaks, appearing on local news outlets, civic organizations, universities, Chambers of Commerce and regional and locate government organization to educate, prepare, answer questions and quell panic. He led the development of one of the first specialized COVID triage process in the ED in Louisiana and expansion of North Oaks’ Medical Intensive Care Unit to increase capacity.
With Dr. Peltier’s guidance, the North Oaks Health System was able to help maintain calm in the community, educate businesses on appropriate use of PPE and disinfection procedures, flatten the curve to prevent COVID volume surges that would overtax the medical center’s capacity, and minimize mortality from the virus. As the spokesperson for North Oaks during the pandemic, Dr. Peltier cemented the organization’s role as a source of truth about the virus and its impact on the community.
