MakatiMed Beyond Malasakit (Compassionate Care) – The Hospital with a Stronger Heart
As one of the first hospitals in the Philippines to be inundated with the surge of cases, Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) was able to provide immediate response with the goal of controlling the spread of the virus and addressing the continuously evolving treatment parameters for the infection.
Guided by the Filipino principle of malasakit, which essentially means compassionately caring for others, the hospital’s various COVID-19 initiatives focused on the overall well-being of all stakeholders in the hospital. MakatiMed enhanced its infection prevention protocols, participated in clinical studies and trials in pursuit of COVID-19 treatments, utilized the technology to lessen risks of frontliners, launched an intensive health information campaign to educate both patients and employees, provided food, accommodation, and transportation support, and regularly checked on patients’ hospital experience to ensure provision of premium care.
The implementation of activities improved not just the patient experience in a pandemic setting but also strengthened the collaboration and support of the medical community. Despite the challenges in the surge of cases, hospital structure, and the decreasing manpower due to quarantine isolations, MakatiMed made sure to provide the proper care to COVID-19 patients, non-COVID-19 patients, and its employees. Malasakit is and will always be the hospital’s thrust in implementing programs to support the safety, health, and well-being of its patients and healthcare workers.
