COVID 19-Through the Eyes of Latifa Women and Children Hospital – An Oasis in the Desert
The Latifa Women and Children Hospital has long been recognized for its maternity, newborn, and pediatric services. When the pandemic struck, however, its staff found themselves caring not only for their usual patients but also for critically ill COVID patients from all walks of life.
In response to Dubai’s national COVID response strategy, the Latifa Hospital expanded its mandate and shifted its operations to accommodate COVID-positive patients. There was a closure of non-essential services, as well as extensive remodeling of units and reallocation of staff from all over the hospital irrespective of their competency to care for COVID-19 positive patients.
LWCH’s staff remained resolute in the face of uncertainty and fear. The sacrifice paid off: the pandemic was controlled across the country, allowing LWCH to resume its normal services. Soon enough, the hospital put a recovery plan in action. It started to transfer patients to designated quarantine centers and call back its staff who had been assigned outside the hospital. Units were also refurbished to serve their original purpose. Slowly but surely, the hospital is moving back towards normalcy and is optimistically preparing to receive women and children.
