ICS COVID-19. A moment, A lesson, A feeling
Catalan Health Institute (ICS) is a public company with over 45,000 professionals across eight hospitals and over 300 primary health centres. As the pandemic raged in Spain, the company had to endure massive patient loads coupled with diminished equipment supply. To cope with the influx of patients, the organization launched a coordinated approach across its hospital network to manage the pandemic.
The ICS had a permanent focus on the emotional state of its professionals, appointing new workers as reinforcements or to cover the great number of COVID-19 related leaves. This also meant ensuring the maximum supply of equipment and materials needed at a time of serious supply shortages. Lastly, it improved its information and communication systems to ensure that the requirements of professionals, patients, media and health authorities are constantly addressed.
The pandemic has prompted ICS to improve its processes at all levels. For instance, teleworking, telemedicine or telecare are now fully integrated into its processes and will probably remain after the crisis. The organization as a whole has also become more agile to the different ways of working and responding to various issues. At the same time, it has also reinforced its research and teaching capacity and has fostered a more integrated method of working across the entire organization.
