Hospital of the Brothers of St. John of God Vienna, Austria
Restart of a hospital during the Covid-19 crisis. Challenges in leadership management – Hospital of St John of god, Vienna.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the hospital had to “restart” its services despite the increasing numbers of infections. To ensure that it was able to adequately respond to patients’ healthcare needs, the hospital implemented a restart task force and a special clean up team.
The tasks of the restart task force include planning for handling patient backlog, implementing rosters to handle backlog and catch up, keep new protocols learned during the crisis into day-to-day operations, and maintain a list of new ideas learned during the crisis. The clean-up team, on the other hand, had to take care of all other tasks not handled by the restart task force, clean up any mistakes, and resolve any problems found during the crisis.
Due to the fact that decisions had to be made very quickly and efficiently, no bureaucratic detours were necessary, which made the decision-making process much easier. The regained cohesion of the entire workforce made it possible to implement major structural changes in the shortest possible time. Executives, employees and stakeholders were involved in working groups and crisis teams from the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis and were involved in the decisions.
