Successful experience “Challenges in comprehensive care for covid-19 patients treated at the San Pedro de Usulután Hospital, 2020”
The Hospital Nacional San Pedro was designated as a national COVID-19 hospital in El Salvador. To cope with the pandemic, the hospital immediately rolled out several biosafety protocols and trained its staff on the proper treatment of COVID-positive patients. It also modified its hospital infrastructure to better deal with the pandemic. Modifications included the creation of a flu unit, the readjustment of respiratory units to accommodate 34 beds, the use of a video surveillance unit in wards, and the establishment of several sanitizing stations for patients and staff. A fully equipped respiratory triage area was also built outside the main entrance of the building. Non-COVID patients also continued receiving essential healthcare services through the home delivery of medicines.
The transformation of the hospital operation and infrastructure was aimed at reducing the morbidity and mortality of patients and the contagion of health personnel who attend to COVID-positive patients. To increase staff safety, the hospital also hired new personnel to provide specialized care for COVID-19 patients. Psychological support was provided to all staff members throughout the pandemic. As a result of these initiatives, the hospital recorded a high recovery rate for admitted patients.
