Contingency Plan 2020 for Pandemic COVID-19 Management
As a public health institution, the Hospital Nacional San Juan de Dios de San Miguel immediately created a COVID-19 contingency plan once news of the novel coronavirus broke out. The plan involved extensive staff training on the proper management of the virus, as well as a comprehensive list of available human and material resources. The hospital then adapted its facilities to allow the isolation of patients. It also established a molecular laboratory to increase its testing capacity for both patients and staff. The hospital also invested in non-invasive ventilation equipment to improve the treatment of its patients. The hospital also carried out epidemiological surveillance across the community, and launched mental health programs for both patients and staff. To safeguard its own workers, the hospital also allowed staff members over 60 and those with chronic diseases to shelter from home.
At the same time, the hospital continued its other services for non-COVID patients. It continued to provide affordable and quality care for patients suffering from a range of illnesses, including kidney and oncological diseases. There was no lack of medical supplies for these patients, and cross-infections were avoided through the use of stringent health protocols.
