Implementing a new emergent Intensive Care Unit for COVID-19 patients in National Hospital Rosales (HNR), El Salvador
Hospital Nacional Rosales is a third-level national reference hospital in El Salvador, with a capacity of 723 hospital beds, two intensive care units, and an intermediate care unit. Normally, it provides around 1,100 daily ambulatory consultations and addresses 130 daily emergency cases.
The HNR strategic management council set a goal of increasing the capacity of ICU beds, in order to assure the care of patients with chronic diseases who become infected with COVID-19. The hospital’s staff worked 24/7 to remodel its wards and make more intensive care beds available. As a result, 59 new ICU beds were opened, making the hospital capable of caring for up to 150 patients during the peak of the pandemic.
To accommodate the influx of patients, the hospital also provided training for non-critical care healthcare personnel. It also formed multidisciplinary teams which created necessary documents such as clinical guidelines, protocols of care and disinfection, and flowcharts for the mobilization of patients and healthcare personnel.
