Reduction of intra-hospital covid-19 infections in health workers at Ilobasco National Hospital, June-August 2020
Ilobasco National Hospital became exclusively dedicated to caring for COVID-19 patients throughout the pandemic. Safeguarding the safety of its staff is a fundamental pillar in its pandemic response strategy. To do this, it provided universal access to personal protective equipment through purchase, donation, and even preparation on site. It also made engineering controls and modernized its infrastructure to eliminate transmission risk. The goal of these efforts was to prevent intra-hospital infections among health workers, reducing absences and guaranteeing quality care to the population.
These measures were put in place through the collaboration of all executives, staff, and shareholders. PPE supply was kept constant by administrative management, preparation of special size equipment, individual packaging, and controlled disinfection processes. PPE was provided across the board, even to staff who are not in contact with patients. Hospital management also guaranteed access to testing for staff, as well as the coordination of transportation and protection centers for workers. New staff were also hired as needed. New infrastructure was initially built with the hospital’s existing resources. This was done by optimizing the areas, establishing routes for the mobilization of patients and health workers, in addition to identifying the areas that could be expanded.
