Hospital de Cubatão
Social Distancing and Virtual Approach – The New Normal
Apart from treating physical symptoms, the Cubatão Hospital quickly addressed the isolation that its staff and patients faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Because of social distancing requirements, many frontline workers were unable to visit their families. Patients also endured isolation because their family members could not be by their side. The Cubatão Hospital management rolled out virtual visits and other initiatives to provide a measure of happiness to the people inside its own institution.
Under the “What matters to you?” initiative, patients were able to do one thing that matters most to them despite being confined in the hospital. For instance, an 82-year-old patient spent the afternoon playing the accordion before a small audience of hospital staff. Another patient was able to spend time with her beloved dog, after three weeks of being confined in the hospital. These initiatives humanize the treatment of patients and bring hope amidst the isolation and anxiety brought about by COVID-19.
