Dental Health Services Victoria
COVID-19, a catalyst for healthcare innovation and transformation at Dental Health Services Victoria
Dental Health Services Victoria (DHSV) rolled out a suite of proactive strategies to achieve proportionate response and equitable outcomes for the most vulnerable and high-risk patients. It mobilized a centralized pandemic control system with representation from across the organization, which enacted a pandemic response framework with definitive prevention, preparedness, response and recovery phases.
Since approximately 95% of dentistry involves aerosol and droplet generation, DHSV introduced levels of clinical restrictions, stopped all aerosol generating procedures and operated under a framework of practice restrictions. Although its services were significantly reduced as a result, the organization also rapidly activated a TeleHealth service to replace in-person appointments and continue the care cycle. Other measures include the use of electronic oral health records and paperless systems to boost DHSV’s data gathering and reporting efforts.
DHSV saw COVID-19 as a catalyst for rapid innovation and executed strategies proactively, collaborating with its patients, staff and consumers. Its patient-facing processes have been refined to better support patients along their oral health journey, strengthening prevention and early intervention to support better health outcomes and care experience for its patients.
