The Medical Technologists Team of Caba District Hospital on their Struggles to Help Fight COVID-19
Caba District Hospital (CDH) is a level one District Hospital in the province of La Union in the Northern Philippines. During the pandemic, its medical technologists played an outsized role in keeping the community and their patients safe. The hospital’s medical technologists conducted thousands of swab tests on both local residents and individuals who had travelled back to the province from the capital.
Daily swabbing tests are done at the hospital from 8:AM to 4:00 PM, but staff could be called on at any time for emergency and post-mortem cases. When mass testing was conducted in response to large-scale outbreaks, the hospital’s medical technologists willingly rendered overtime work and stayed in the hospital while waiting for their own test results. A room adjacent to the laboratory was provided for them by hospital management as their quarters, but the team provided their own meals at their own expense.
Caba District Hospital’s team of dedicated medical technologists are crucial in the province’s battle against the pandemic. They worked selflessly despite supply shortages and endured stifling PPEs for hours on end even during the height of summer. Without their sacrifice, it would be impossible for other healthcare workers to provide adequate treatment for COVID patients and curb the virus.
