Aster Sanad Nurse Heroes –A Coordinated Response to the COVID-19 Pandemic
As soon as news of the new virus broke out, Aster Sanad Hospital immediately activated an incident command center and formed a task force to deal with a potential outbreak. First, it conducted a comprehensive risk assessment and rolled out mock to train its staff drills. Priority measures were identified based on credible references like WHO, CDC, and MOH guidelines. The overall objective of these measures was to enable Aster Sanad to take a timely response to the virus.
These mock drills soon became a reality. For months, over 90% of the hospital’s capacity was dedicated to treating COVID patients with varying severity of illness. To attain the best patient outcomes, Aster Sanad’s management and staff focused their efforts on maintaining the continuity of essential services, ensuring the effective use of scarce resources, and maintaining a safe environment for health workers.
Aster Sanad’s staff actively volunteered their own resources to cope with shortages brought about by the lockdown. When the hospital realized that the supply in its blood bank was running low, ten nurses selflessly came forward to donate, yielding 28 bags of blood for several patients. With the constant support of hospital leadership and the dedication of its staff, Aster Sanad was able to deal strategically with the pandemic.
