“From Zero to Hero: How Apollo Madurai set up Molecular Lab from scratch”
At the beginning of the pandemic, patients in the city of Madurai had to wait for days for the results of their PCR tests. This led to delays in treatment not only for COVID-19 patients but also for other patients, a confirmed PCR test was required before any elective procedure could be conducted.
To address this, Apollo Speciality Hospitals – Madurai immediately set out to establish its own molecular testing laboratory. This was completed in just five days, despite the fact that acquiring the necessary equipment was costly and burdened the hospital’s financial position. The hospital’s engineering team worked day and night to set up the lab, while its healthcare personnel underwent necessary training at a nearby government hospital.
The turnaround time for test results was reduced significantly, allowing faster treatment for patients who need to undergo elective procedures. Initially, the tests were only conducted by ENT doctors; soon after, all phlebotomists and few of the nurses were also trained on swab collection. As a result, the hospital’s molecular laboratory now handles 800 samples a day. It receives samples from all public hospitals in neighboring regions, making it indispensable in the government’s fight against the pandemic.
