Project KAVACH: Protecting against the COVID-19 pandemic
As one of the largest healthcare providers in South Asia, Apollo Hospitals has been at the forefront of battling the COVID-19 pandemic in India. When the first case of COVID-19 was reported in India, the hospital rapidly identified and mitigated the existing as well as potential risks brought about by the pandemic.
An assessment was conducted to assess the current status of the hospital’s resources, including PPE and critical equipment such as ventilators, pulse oximeters, thermal scanners, and the like. Staffing in COVID areas was also reviewed. Extensive training was provided to staff, and processes were automated to the maximum extent possible in order to minimize physical contact between individuals.
A team of expert senior consultants from across the country which included the infectious disease specialists, critical care consultants, pulmonologists, etc. to design the standard investigation & treatment protocol to be followed across the Apollo group. Multiple initiatives were taken up in all units such as redesigned fever clinics, dedicated COVID wards and ICUs, online screening of patients and visitors, re-engineering patient flow, paperless registration, and fixed timings for doctor rounds, among others. The success of these initiatives is illustrated by the high number of registrations in Apollo’s new app, as well as a staggering 20% increase in the patient satisfaction rate despite the pandemic.
