Multipurpose Operating Room for patient Covid and patient no Covid
Due to the highly infectious nature of COVID-19, a multipurpose operating room had to be created to treat positive patients at the Althaia, Xarxa Assistencial Universitaria de Manresa, a hospital in Barcelona, Spain.
A dedicated operating room was not feasible due to the high costs and low utilization rates of such a facility. In contrast, the multipurpose operating room allows the hospital to perform COVID and non-COVID surgical activity in the same operating room. The hospital put in place a technical but affordable solution which allowed it to safely use the same facility in treating infected and non-infected patients. The project
Shifting the operating room’s use from a non-COVID patient to a COVID-positive patient takes only 15 minutes. The shift takes two hours if the prior occupant of the operating room is a COVID-positive patient. The change is so fast and efficient that it allows the hospital to sustain a high productivity in its operating room, removing the need to create a specific operating room for COVID.
