Dr Layla McCay is Director of International Relations at NHS Confederation in the UK, representing and supporting the NHS on topics from Brexit to COVID-19. With a medical degree from the University of Glasgow, Layla trained as a psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and later sat on the Trust Board before moving into health systems and public health policy. She has since worked for the UK government as Clinical Advisor at the Department of Health and Social Care; for the private sector as Assistant Medical Director at Bupa; and internationally, including working for the World Health Organisation, the World Bank, and several global NGOs, including her own think tank, The Centre for Urban Design and Mental Health. She has held academic roles at Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Hong Kong University, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and at TED, and contributes regularly in the UK and international media on NHS matters.
