Green Hospitals : sharing innovative practices for a sustainable future

If the world’s healthcare sector were a country, it would be the fifth-largest emitter of carbon emissions on the planet.

Climate change is at risk of becoming the biggest public health threat of our generation. Medical professionals have identified climate change from carbon emissions as the ‘biggest global health threat of the 21st century’[1]. Between 2030 and 2050, climate change is expected to cause more than 250,000 additional deaths per year.

As the impacts of climate change upon the environment and society become ever clearer, the healthcare sector needs to urgently recognise the opportunity it has to lead the way in tackling this global crisis. Across the world, healthcare professionals are at the forefront of the fight against climate change and are driving innovations to invent the ‘green hospital’ of the future.

On October 7th, the International Hospital Federation and Dialog Health will host a special virtual event to bring together healthcare executives from across the world, to share their stories and strategies of leading innovative practices for a sustainable future.

Session participants will learn from, and engage with:

  • Practical guidance on developing organisational advocacy for sustainability.
  • Experiences of leaders accelerating the sustainability agenda in their organisations, providing pragmatic advice on making the business case for ‘green leadership’.
  • Innovative examples of programs and projects focused on responding to the sustainability and climate change agenda – including energy efficiency, waste management and engaging the workforce.

Participation is a key feature of this virtual event: attendees will have the opportunity for direct, in-depth discussion with ‘green hospital’ leaders, and to network with other international participants working on the climate change agenda. Participants will also be able to learn from four awarded hospitals to share their innovative practices on energy savings, sustainable buildings, waste management, and new ways to engage with staff and patients.

Why attend?

As healthcare and hospital executives come under increasing pressure from politicians, patients, and employees to address climate change, the time for action is now. This event presents a unique opportunity to learn from and engage with healthcare leaders across the world who have developed adaptive responses to climate change in their hospital systems.

Who should attend?

The event will gather senior- and mid-level professionals in the healthcare sector with an interest in knowing more about environmental sustainability and seeking pragmatic ways of starting their organisation’s journey to ‘net zero’.
