In the Time of COVID-19, the IHF Gives a New Impulse to its Leadership

GENEVA, 6 August 2020 – The International Hospital Federation announces the selection of Ronald Lavater as the next Chief Executive Officer.

After having adopted the IHF beyond 2020 strategy and as part of its well-organised succession plan with the expected retirement of its CEO, Eric de Roodenbeke by the end of 2020, the IHF is announcing that its new CEO will take full responsibility on 1st December 2020.

Speaking on behalf of IHF’s Governing Board, Dr. Risto Miettunen, IHF President, who chaired the selection committee for the new CEO added, “We are very pleased to welcome Ronald Lavater to the IHF and believe his very strong health service business experience will equip him to lead IHF forward during its next phase of development.”

“Even before the turmoil caused by the COVID-19 crisis, the IHF leadership, with the adoption of IHF beyond 2020 strategy, recognised the need for the organisation to find a new impetus to maintain IHF’s global relevance and its role as a thought-leading organisation. Ronald has the right leadership experience to continue IHF’s position as an international platform for exchange of operational knowledge and professional practices for health leaders and to enhance engagement with the private sector both on corporate and service delivery fronts.” says Dr. Miettunen.

Mr. Lavater is eager to bring his expertise to the role and said, “I am honoured and excited to be selected to lead the IHF. Now more than any other time in recent history there is a need for international collaboration among our health services and IHF can have a significant positive impact during this time of uncertainty.”

Eric de Roodenbeke will continue to lead the IHF until the end of November 2020 while Mr. Lavater joins in October to allow for a smooth two-month transition period. Eric de Roodenbeke explains, “During this extraordinary time, we planned for a meaningful transition to allow us to build on our current assets while transforming our services to better respond to the IHF community expectations. I am very confident that Ronald will bring to the IHF additional capacities that will allow further growth and relevance of the organisation for it to fully achieve its mission”.

Mr. Lavater is a healthcare executive with 25 years of leadership experience in academic, private and publicly traded healthcare companies in the United States and international markets. His management experience includes leading hospitals for HCA Healthcare in the US, the largest for-profit hospital company in the world, and for Johns Hopkins Medicine International in the United Arab Emirates. He also served on the Board for an eye hospital company with operations in England, Poland and Czech Republic. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Florida (USA) and a master’s degree in public administration from Florida State University (USA).
